Quick answer

To fully use HRA, your rent should be at least HRA received + 10% of basic salary (monthly), since exemption depends on rent minus 10% of basic. For example, ₹25,000 HRA and ₹50,000 basic means paying at least ₹30,000 rent. Enter your figures above.

Frequently asked questions

Why does rent need to exceed 10% of basic?
One HRA limit is "rent paid − 10% of basic", so paying below 10% of basic gives zero exemption on that limit.
Does this guarantee full HRA exemption?
It maximises one of the three limits; the actual exemption is the least of the three (also capped at HRA received and 40/50% of basic).
Do I need proof of rent?
Yes — keep rent receipts, and provide the landlord's PAN if annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh.
